PDT case 2: Twenty-one-year-old, Arab stallion with squamous cell carcinoma.
This patient presented with a non-healing, persistent area of scabbing and exudation in the unpigmented skin of his right nostril; histopathology confirmed a diagnosis of squamous cell carcinoma (SCC).
This SCC case was treated with a combination of laser surgery, to debulk the tumour, and subsequent, adjunctive PDT in order to maximise the patient's probability of remission; these procedures were conducted under standing sedation. On follow-up, 18 months later, there was no evidence of the tumour's recurrence.
